The Importance of Family Photography

Updated: Jul 16, 2023

Family photography is a wonderful way to capture memories and create lasting keepsakes for generations to come. In this blog, we'll discuss what family photography is, why it's important, and some tips for capturing great family photos.

Why is Family Photography Important?

Family photography is important because it helps families capture memories and create keepsakes that can be cherished for generations. Family photos can serve as a visual representation of a family's history and provide a tangible reminder of the love, joy, and togetherness shared by its members.

Tips for Capturing Great Family Photos

  1. Plan ahead. Before your family photo shoot, plan the location, outfits, and any props or accessories you'll be using. Make sure everyone is on board and excited for the shoot. Don't plan the shoot just before family brunch. I know you think it's convenient for you, but everyone will be starving and miserable! And there is only so much photoshopping I can do!!!

  2. Choose the right time of day. The best time for outdoor family photos is during the "golden hour," which is the hour before sunset when the light is soft and warm. Or early in the morning as the sun is rising. A lot of people choose 10:00 am or 11:00 am - this can be OK but might start to creep into the harsh midday sunlight, which can cast unflattering shadows.

  3. If you need, bring a friend. Sometimes it can be enough for me to crack a few jokes and everyone is relaxed. And some families need that person - that boss that needs to whip everyone into shape. If you are that person, and you need to be in the picture, I would suggest bringing a friend that everyone will listen to.

  4. Use the unconventional! A lot of families will sit all in a row and hang their hands at their sides and half-smile as if they may be zombies! You look that way because this isn't you. Maybe you are the loud one, maybe you are the one who is always trying to make everyone laugh. So many times people try to become the person they think we want them to be, only to look way more awkward than they ever could just being themselves.

  5. Capture candid moments. If the picture is done being taken, just enjoy the time with your family. Chat with them. Don't look at your phone. Don't look at your watch and say you only have a few more minutes. Until what? You have to go home and sit on your couch? Let this be a time to reconnect, get caught up in the moment, let some time pass without needing to accomplish anything besides enjoying each other's company.

Conclusion Family photography is a wonderful way to capture memories and create lasting keepsakes for generations to come. By planning ahead, choosing the right time of day, getting everyone comfortable, using natural poses, capturing candid moments, and editing your photos, you can capture great family photos that will be treasured for years to come. Remember to have fun, be patient, and enjoy the experience of capturing memories with your loved ones.
